The Koorie Youth Council (KYC) is the representative organisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people residing in Victoria. KYC facilitates and amplifies the voices, aspirations and experiences, whilst valuing the diversity and strength of young people as decision makers. KYC advocates to government and community to advance the rights and representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. By hosting events like the annual Koorie Youth Summit, KYC brings Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people together to amplify their voices for social change.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of programs and initiatives aimed at engaging and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Provide guidance and support to direct reports to ensure successful program delivery.
  • Monitor program outcomes and impact, making data-informed decisions to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Manage the organisation’s programs budget, ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with funding contracts and grant agreements.
  • Oversee financial reporting and accountability, including the preparation of funding reports, budgets, and financial statements.
  • Identify opportunities for revenue generation and diversification to support the organisation’s long-term viability.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, Aboriginal organisations, community partners, and funders.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to staff members, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
  • Support staff in setting and achieving individual and team goals, providing regular feedback, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment that values diversity, cultural integrity, and Indigenous knowledge.
  • Conduct regular reviews and assessments of organisational performance relevant to Programs, identifying areas for improvement, growth, and innovation.

About You

  • A strong understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community, with a demonstrated knowledge of community strengths and challenges, particularly those that relate to young people.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and management roles.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with diverse range of people ranging from community members, executives and government representatives.
  • Demonstrated understanding of working within a youth participation framework.
  • Proven track record in program management, financial management, and stakeholder engagement, including experience with reporting requirements for funding contracts and grants.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • A willingness to work occasionally on weekends and evenings, and to travel regionally and rurally. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children and young people from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to the Code of Ethical Practice for the Victorian Youth Sector and the Victorian Child Safe Standards.
  • Compliance with all KYC and VALS values, code of conduct, policies and procedures and relevant government legislation and standards where relevant.
